Archive for New York City
DESIGN 202 | Spring 2014 | prof. Ron Didonno
solid vs void
The project seeks to create an archive for NYC which mediates the built and unbuilt, creating a direct connection to the adjacent park. It seeks to create consciousness that the green areas also for part of the city’s archive.
The massing is carved out through a shifting void, creating terraces and a smooth transition between inside and outside conditions, therefore allowing for an interaction with the park while being inside the library.
The archive itself is set on the West side of the building to protect the books from the sunlight, while people spaces like reading rooms are set on the East side to take advantage of the sunlight and views.
